rote leerstelle juxtaposes the albanian alps and a red car.
the red car -- a remnant of an albanian-staple seen throughout various albanian communities -- is exposed to the viewer[s] as well as the elements. the red car’s exposure to the elements of the valbona valley renders it a projection surface or a ‘leerstelle’. indeed, this is amplified through the car being empty, devoid of (m)any essential pieces: including two doors, tires, rims, and various metal fragments. in this composition, the red car’s ‘leere’ qualities are enhanced as the backdrop shows lush greenery of the albanian heights.
there is a great discrepancy between this frame -- taken a few minutes from valbona center -- and the (tourist) center of valbona, where oversized buildings penetrate the albanian alps and enable tourists to enter the valley. thus, rote leerstelle brings forth a fragility to the human-made within a natural context.
