paradigmata nebulosae
january 2023
isniq, kosovë

paradigmata nebulosae is an ephemeral snapshot set in the backyard of my hometown in isniq (kosovë) in early january of this year. centered is a silhouette of a red renault 19. seemingly corporeally attached is a shapeless entity. it almost looks as if the emissions of the red renault 19 are captured in the snapshot. indeed, it is a blue unhcr reinforced plastic tarpaulin, explicitly referring to the UN refugee agency and its engagment in war-zones.

the foggy dawn encases the two objects. the explicit shakiness with which the photograph was taken only amplifies the fogginess. as a result of this dynamic, the two objects are rendered rather illegible, particularly in terms of their colors (or lack thereof). both the red renault 19, as well as the blue UNHCR tarpaulin, radiate their vibrant colors under regular circumstances.

our backyard - bashqë - is rather bleak. the trees have lost their leaves a while ago, adamantly waiting for spring. further, as is usual for albanian culture, there are fences and partitions demarcating the ownership of land. the usually lush green grass has turned to a brownish mixture of stomped grass stalks and mud.

the various elements are all inherently tied to peace.
the red renault 19 and the blue UNHCR tarpaulin are linked to the post-war period in kosovë. the latter constitutes a remnant of a literal peace-building action. the car was purchased right after my family returned from the refuge in neighboring albania, thus heralding a new post-war paradigm.

these two main protagonists are set in our bashqë, which to me personally has always had an escaping quality to it. this might be tied to the usage of the bashqë: it is the space where various fruit trees flourish. this frame shows the beginning of the bashqë, opening up to the space i used to go to in order to get away from all the noise – and still do. oftentimes, our bashqë is also the space i think of when describing my home in kosovë. as a second-generation immigrant to switzerland, a swiss-kosovë dual citizen, this space has always been able to give me some sort of peace (of mind).

lastly, i want to comment on the all-enveloping fog, which has – as described above – this color- and legibility-diminishing quality but simultaneously rids the scene of any disturbing elements. this is the very moment where paradigmata nebulosae unveils itself to the viewer(s). in so doing, it enhances the qualities of the two objects as well as the setting itself, which are subjectively tied to an inner or interior peace.
